Topical Cream Study Finds CBD Can Reach Bloodstream with Novel Agent
The mental healthcare company Wellbeing Digital Sciences reported that its subsidiary KGK Science used Gefion Canada GT4 Technology to deliver CBD and THC to the bloodstream via a topical cream rubbed into the skin. GT4 technology developed novel penetrating agents capable of delivering cannabinoids into the bloodstream through the skin.
This is a critical study because it shows for the first time that CBD and THC can be transported into the bloodstream via the skin via a cream as opposed to a transdermal patch. The researchers hope that GT4 Technology is finding a path to delivering steady-state cannabinoid concentrations to treat chronic conditions while minimizing the potential psychoactive effects on patients. The participants in this study did not experience any psychoactive effects, and the topical contents were well-tolerated.
According to the Wellbeing Digital Sciences press release,
“These findings present a potential benefit in the treatment of chronic conditions over longer periods of time, or in the treatment of diseases where high concentrations of cannabinoids are needed in relation to the body weight of vulnerable populations such as pediatrics.”
Until this point, the transdermal patch was the only known process for the transdermal (through the skin) delivery of cannabinoids to the bloodstream.
Dr. Erin Lewis, scientific director at KGK Science, believes the results of this study could lead to significant research through future double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. The researchers believe a topical CBD product could be a good option for people needing longer-term administration of cannabinoids without worrying about experiencing intoxication.
This is exciting news for people who could eventually benefit from cannabinoids as a therapeutic that addresses various chronic health conditions. Applying a CBD and THC cream that enables cannabinoids to reach the bloodstream makes it possible for a person with any lifestyle who suffers from certain chronic diseases to apply the cream as necessary. A cream can be used anywhere on the body, in the ideal amount and for any area size.
An added benefit is that many other studies have already found that topical application of CBD cream aids brings relief for dry skin. Suppose future researchers expand on this study and prove the efficacy of a novel penetrating agent’s ability to deliver CBD through the skin and into the circulatory system. In that case, topical products will eventually be developed containing only CBD and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids that can do the same. The products would be excellent options for people who want to avoid THC.
