New Study Investigates CBD Use for Dogs
Researchers have developed a transmucosal CBD-infused dissolving sheet that holds promising potential in reducing the effects of THC toxicosis in dogs. With the increasing number of dogs experiencing marijuana toxicosis, this new treatment offers hope in alleviating the unpleasant and sometimes serious symptoms in dogs who consume THC.
This small study, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, had six dogs participating, but the positive results are encouraging.
The report states, “The use of transmucosal CBD-infused dissolving sheets resulted in expedient resolution of clinical signs in a minimally invasive manner accessible to both clients and veterinary practitioners.”
This means people using marijuana can have the sheets on hand in their homes or elsewhere should their dog experience THC toxicosis, enabling fast treatment until they can get professional veterinary assistance.
The six dogs given transmucosal CBD-infused dissolving sheets were known to have consumed or inhaled THC. After the sheets were administered, the signs of toxicosis in three of six dogs were resolved within 28 hours. In five of six dogs, the signs of toxicosis were noticeably reduced within 45 minutes. CBD works because numerous research projects have shown CBD is an antagonist of THC, meaning it reduces the effects of THC through its interaction in the endocannabinoid system.
The symptoms of THC toxicosis in dogs include unease and lethargy in mild cases. In more severe cases, symptoms include urinary incontinence, ataxia (loss of muscle coordination), bradycardia (slow heart rate), tremors, vomiting, hypothermia, disorientation and more. The symptoms may appear within 30 minutes after THC ingestion, but in some cases, it takes several hours.
The positive results of this study are encouraging, but it is important for dog owners to seek veterinary care if their dog consumes THC in any manner. Even if the transmucosal CBD-infused dissolving sheets are successful in a much larger study, getting veterinary advice remains important. Much more research is needed at this point.
Of course, the best advice is for dog owners to be proactive in preventing their dogs from accessing any products containing THC. However, accidents can happen even under the best circumstances. Sheets like those the researchers developed would offer some assurance that a pet can get quick relief.
