USDA National Hemp Report Shows 40% Increase in 2024 Hemp Production

USDA National Hemp Report Shows 40% Increase in 2024 Hemp Production

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the National Hemp Report on April 17, 2025. The report revealed a remarkable 40% surge in 2024 hemp production in the United States, reaching a total of $445 million. This substantial growth was primarily driven by a surge in the total acres dedicated to hemp cultivation.

Outdoor production, which NASS calls ‘open field’ growing, suggests continued interest in cannabidiol and other hemp-derived extracts, including THC.

A total of 45,294 acres were planted with hemp in 2024, an increase of 64% compared to 2023.

  • The planted area for industrial hemp increased by 64% in 2024.
  • The value of industrial hemp production in the open field increased by 46% in 2024.
  • Floral hemp production grown in the open in 2024 increased by 159%.
  • The value of floral hemp grown in the open increased 43% for a total of $386 million.
  • The production of hemp grown in the open for grain increased 10% in 2024.
  • The value of hemp grown in the open for grain increased 13% for a total of $2.62 million
  • The production of hemp grown in the open for seed increased 7% in 2024.
  • The value of hemp grown in the open for seed increased 482% to $28.7 million.
  • The production of hemp grown in the open for fiber increased 23% in 2024.
  • The value of hemp grown in the open for fiber decreased by 3% to $11.2 million.

Hemp grown under protection – in structures such as greenhouses, hoop houses, or other enclosed agricultural facilities – had mixed results. The area used under protection grew by 9%, to 3.52 million square feet. However, the total value of hemp grown under protection decreased by 13%, to $28.7 million. The total value decline is likely due to higher input costs leading to lower profit margins, a consistent oversupply in some segments, and shifting demand patterns. In the hemp grown under protection, floral hemp production decreased by 35%, but seed hemp grown under protection increased by 91%.

The report also includes additional statistics that demonstrate the hemp industry’s strength. As confidence in the safety of CBD grows, the future of hemp production looks promising. The year 2024 marks a rebound, with the value of hemp production significantly lower in 2022 and 2023 compared to 2021. However, the value has been on a steady rise since 2021, indicating the industry’s resilience. The COVID-19 pandemic likely impacted sales in 2022 and 2023 as people strived to overcome the financial impacts. As the economy recovers, the stability of the hemp industry is evident.
