Hemp Compounds Showing Promise for Preventing Covid-19 from Entering Human Cells in the Body
Oregon State University recently conducted research on hemp compounds through a chemical screening process that they originally invented. These compounds were determined to have the potential to prevent COVID-19 from being able to enter human cells. The study was led by researcher Richard van Breeman who is part of Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center and College of Pharmacy.
Originally published in the Journal of Natural Products, this study explains that there are two cannabinoid acids, CBGA and CBDA (cannabigerolic acid and cannabidiolic acid) in hemp that have the ability to bind together with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that we’ve come to learn a lot about in the past couple of years. This pair of cannabinoid acids binds to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and blocks a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.
Cannabinoid Acids and Spike Protein
The two acids are very commonly found in hemp extract. They were found thanks to a screening technique that was developed by the researchers. Also, they do not function as the psychotropic substance in hemp, as THC does. The research shows that CBGA and CBDA are equally effective against all of the current variants of SARS-CoV-2 that we have experienced globally thus far.
The spike protein that is on the RNA strands of SARS-CoV-2 binds to the surface of human cells. It replicates at a fast rate, which has made it difficult to treat the infection. When you have an inhibitor in the way of hemp acids, this can be used to prevent infection before the infection becomes a deadly problem. This study suggests that the ACE2 enzyme, which is very prevalent in the lungs and respiratory tract, responds to hemp extract. Research is also being done to investigate the potential for hemp to shorten the duration of a Covid infection.
There were other substances screened as part of this study, including red clover, wild yam, hops, and three different species of licorice.
