Survey Finds College Students Use CBD Monthly

A survey of 4,183 undergraduate students at the University of Georgia found that over 29% of the students reported they use CBD monthly. The primary reasons reported for taking CBD are to help them handle everyday tension and overwhelm, and reduce sleeping problems. This is the largest survey of college students and their CBD use ever taken.
The lead author, Jennie Pless, is a doctoral student at the University of Georgia School of Social Work. She reminds people that college is a time of fun and newfound freedom, but also a time of uncertainty.
“We have students who are taking on a whole new world and living on their own for the first time with other life responsibilities. They have a lot going on and aren’t sleeping well, so they’re trying to find ways to navigate it all. CBD is one of them.”
The survey, published in the Journal of Substance Use, found that 48% of the study participants have tried taking CBD at least once. Approximately 1 in 5 participants reported that CBD helped them fall asleep and improve sleep quality. Male study participants were more willing to try CBD products and continue using them than female participants.
The students often tried CBD because friends had products on hand and either recommended them or offered them. Pless says that college students will try things because they are there. College students are more willing to try new things as they deal with the pressure and worry of balancing school requirements, jobs, and their personal lives.
The most popular product is CBD gummies, but edibles in general are preferred to other product forms. Anyone 18 years or older can legally purchase CBD in Georgia, and it is non-addictive.
For so many people, CBD has proven helpful in addressing wellness issues. As U.S. federal and state legislators and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continue to develop fair laws and regulations for the production and sale of CBD products, it is hoped that the results will continue to support the market for safe, high-quality CBD products. CBD is all-natural, meaning it is preferred over many prescription drugs that produce significant side effects.
