Study Finds CBD Improves Sleep Quality Similar to Melatonin

Researchers at UCLA and the Scripps Clinic Sleep Center in San Diego studied how CBD and melatonin influence sleep quality. The clinical trial data was published in the Journal of the American Nutrition Association, and analysis shows that CBD alone or CBD combined with minor cannabinoids works the same as melatonin.

There were 1,793 adult study participants, all experiencing sleep quality issues. The double-blind, randomized, controlled study involved participants randomly given a four-week supply of one of six types of capsules. Some contained only 15 mg of CBD or only 5 mg of melatonin, and some contained CBD combined with minor cannabinoids like CBC (cannabichromene) and CBN (cannabinol). A weekly online survey using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Sleep Disturbance SF 8A was sent to the study participants to determine effectiveness.

The study’s results found that sleep quality improved in 56% to 75% of participants taking any formulations. The study also found that it did not make a significant difference in sleep quality improvement whether taking:

  • 15 mg of CBD isolate (only CBD)
  • 5 mg of melatonin
  • 15 mg of CBD isolate and 15 mg of CBN
  • 15 mg of CBD isolate, 15 mg of CBN and 5 mg of CBC
  • 15 mg of CBD isolate and 5 mg of melatonin
  • 15 mg of CBD isolate, 5 mg of melatonin and 15 mg of CBN

In other words, participants who took CBD alone or combined with minor cannabinoids experienced a clinically important improvement in their sleep quality, similar to how melatonin did it. The research authors concluded,

“Most participants across all formulations experienced a clinically important improvement in their sleep quality. … Our findings suggest that chronic use of a low dose of CBD is safe, though these effects do not exceed that of 5 mg melatonin.”

Melatonin does not work for everyone trying to improve sleep, so these participants tried CBD isolate or CBD combined with minor cannabinoids or melatonin. Though this study finds CBD and melatonin have a similar effect on sleep quality, other studies have found that CBD alone or a combination of CBD and melatonin influence the same in patients who want to improve outcomes of sleep efficacy. A growing body of research finds that CBD may produce many positive effects.
