Best way to take CBD oil for relief

  • Published October 19, 2026

Choosing a way to use a CBD product depends on where you feel discomfort and how quickly you want to get results. For a specific spot, such as a knee or lower back, apply a topical product directly to that area. For whole-body use, take a tincture under your tongue. Gummies and capsules suit people who take the same amount of CBD every day.

Under the tongue (for oils and tinctures)

Measure your desired amount, place it under your tongue, and hold it there for 30 to 60 seconds before you swallow. Absorption usually finishes in 15 to 25 minutes. You can change the amount in small steps. For example, if one full dropper contains 25 mg of CBD, you can start with half or a quarter of a dropper.

Topicals (lotions, creams, balms, roll-ons)

Rub the product into one area. The body typically processes topical CBD in 25 to 45 minutes. Choose a product labeled for skin use, because not every CBD oil is meant to be applied topically.

Edibles and capsules

These products are easy to take every day, and they hide the hemp taste. They usually take 20 to 30 minutes and come in fixed servings, so fine-tuning the amount is harder. Taking them with a meal that contains some fat may improve absorption.

Patches

Your body heat activates the patch, which releases a controlled amount of CBD through the skin into the bloodstream. Absorption takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
