Researchers Examine CBD for Oily and Blemish-Prone Skin
A new systematic review suggests that Cannabidiol (CBD) may have promising applications in topical products designed for blemish-prone skin, excess oil production, and visible redness. However, the researchers emphasize that the available clinical evidence remains preliminary.
The review was written by Baatile Komane and Thobile Kaye of Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa and published in Molecules in June 2026. Komane and Kaye reviewed research published from 2010 to 2024. Their review covered laboratory studies, research on human tissue, and small early-stage clinical trials. The studies looked at whether CBD could influence oil production in the skin, sebaceous gland function, redness, and the number of visible blemishes.
One finding involved BTX 1503, an experimental topical product containing 5% of CBD. According to the review, participants experienced an average reduction of about 40 percent in visible lesions after 12 weeks. The formula produced the strongest results among the tested concentrations.
The authors also discussed a 2014 study by Attila Oláh and colleagues. The researchers found that CBD reduced excessive lipid production in sebocytes, the cells responsible for producing sebum. This offers a possible explanation for CBD’s potential role in products intended for oily and blemish-prone skin.
Despite these encouraging signals, Komane and Kaye said that the evidence has important limitations. The reviewed studies used different formulations, treatment schedules and outcome measures, while several relied on small participant groups.
The study concluded:
“This review highlights the need for methodologically rigorous and transparent clinical studies, standardized formulations, validated outcome measures and the integration of sustainability metrics to strengthen evidence synthesis, clarify clinical relevance and guide responsible cosmeceutical development.”
The review also found that evidence for direct antimicrobial effects and lasting results after treatment ends remains limited. Product performance may depend on CBD concentration, carrier ingredients, formulation stability, delivery technology and application frequency.
For now, the findings suggest that topical CBD may have value as a supporting skincare ingredient rather than a proven medical solution. Results may also depend on additional ingredients and individual skin characteristics.
